The large copper butterfly is one of the butterflies from the family of Gossamer (Lycaenidae). This moth reaches a wingspan of 2.7 cm to 4 cm with males and females being very different. The male has a very strong orange-red coloration on the wing upper surface whose edge is black and is surrounded by white. In females, the color is dark brown. The front wing, the areas between the wing veins are colored dark-orange and have a distinctive dark blue spot right in the middle. The bottom side of the wing is pale orange and has black dots with white edges. The females lay eggs on the edible plants from which they will then develop into caterpillars of about 2 cm of length.

They have a green color and fine white dots. The animals are found in various parts of Europe as there are several deposits in south-west Spain, north-east France, in North and West Germany, the Baltic States and the Balkans to Turkey. They prefer marshes and wet meadows and can be found at altitudes of up to 1000 meters. Due to modern agriculture, the loss of habitat and the use of chemicals used to protect the plants means their population has been decimated throughout. Moths feed on the natural meadows of various flowers, especially of Ross Mint (Mentha longifolia and old herbs (Senecio spp.).
