Finback Whale

The Finback Whales are among the baleen whales, which means they filter, with their beards, micro-organisms such as krill from the waters of the oceans. They are solitary living beings, which means they are rarely encountered in groups only meeting during the mating season. The males can reach a size of up to 24 meters of length on the northern hemisphere whereas on the southern hemisphere there have been sights of Finback Whales measuring up to 27 meters in length.

Unusually, the females of this species are slightly larger than the males, but with the same weight of about 40 to 70 tons. The fin whale can be considered as a fairly slender whale, considering its body structure. The back of fin whales is dark gray to black brown, the underside is white colored and another characteristic of this whale species is also the asymmetric distribution of color in the head area: the lower jaw is white on the right side and of a dark color on the left side. Fin whales can appear in all oceans. They are among the whales which prefer the open ocean areas and steer clear of coastal regions. In the mating season, and also for the birth of their young, they migrate to subtropical warmer waters. For feeding, they again return to colder sea areas such as areas of the Arctic and Antarctic. After the blue whales were almost exterminated by commercial whaling, the fin whales began to be heavily hunted. 1982 International Whaling Commission (IWC) decided that, in 1986, commercial catching Fin Whales would be authorized only when the number of whales had gone up as they were dangerously close to extinction. In 2003, the American Cetacean Society found that there were about 15,000 more fin whales on the Südhalb Ball and 40,000 on the Norhalb Ball including their relatives, the blue whales, however, they were still at a high risk of being completely extinct. Life expectancy of Fin whales is over 100 years.
