(Sotalia fluviatilis)
In the Amazon, there are two types of freshwater dolphins, the tucuxi, i.e. the gray bottlenose dolphin or Sotalia fluviatilis and the Pink Amazone dolphin, also called boto. When the South American continent rose, an inland sea was created, and the dolphins that lived in it adapted to fresh water little by little. Boto can measure up to 2.6 meters (8.5ft) and can weigh up to 352lb (160k) and it is found in the Orinoco and Amazon basins which are interconnected. They have a long flexible beak covered by round sharp teeth and a flexible neck that allows them to move the head in all directions and small eyes and they are oriented mainly with its highly specialized localization system through echoes, through which they can also be oriented in muddy waters.
When the Amazon River grows in times of rain, they swim among the trees. They live alone, in pairs or in small groups. They generally avoid the significant flows of water and prefer staying in the small arms of the river. In addition to its aerodynamic body and its elongated beak, it is characteristic of the boto, its rounded head, the dorsal fin and the caudal fins. The dorsal fin evolved to be a ridge. Its color varies according to age and it can be brownish gray to pink. Pink occurs when the capillaries reveal themselves through the thin skin. In its beak, it has stiff hairs that are sensitive to the touch. They feed primarily on fish and small crustaceans found in the coastal mud. The native people have always worshipped dolphins, but they are currently threatened by environmental pollution (mercury), by the destruction of their habitats (deforestation, construction of dams), by the trawl nets, by the growing traffic of boats and by fishermen that kill them. They are considered a very threatened species and they are officially protected.
Pink Amazone dolphin in Mythology: For centuries, the native people have lived peacefully with the dolphins and have worshipped them as they have an important role in their myths and stories. In some tribes, there is a belief that the people who drown turn into river dolphins and that, in their occasional visits to the land; they can return to human form again. Among the native people of Guiana and along the Black River there are many stories that say that with full moon, the Pink Amazone dolphin can turn into a handsome gentleman in a white suit and a hat and goes to the party to find the most beautiful girl, which he enchants and takes with him.
This is the reason why any young outsider is being looked at with initial mistrust. When a young woman or a girl becomes pregnant and it is not known who the father is, it is said that the Pink Amazone dolphin is the father. Currently, there are still many birth certificates in which the father figure is the pink Amazone dolphin. Even at present, native people mixed up myth with reality. In many places, it is still a belief that a man possessing a penis of the pink Amazone dolphin can attract young beautiful women. Unfortunately, many pink Amazone dolphins are killed for this reason.
